CCUW Women United: November 2023 Newsletter

The holiday season is upon us...

We’ve made it through Halloween, quickly followed by All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and Dia de los Muertos. Veterans’ Day is November 11. Later this month is Thanksgiving. Then we have an abundance of December holidays – Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Don’t overlook the Winter Solstice, December 21, when the days begin – slowly at first – to get longer. And it’s wrapped up with New Year’s Eve and Day. November's newsletter much like the month itself, offers several updates and opportunities.

Holiday Gift Cards for Child Access Center

Women United has a long history of supporting the Child Access Center, including during the holiday season. It began in 2008 with significant financial support - $57,000 in the early years of the establishment of the Center. For the past few years Women United members have also been supporting Center families during the holidays by providing the funds for the holiday gift cards that Centre Safe and the Child Access Center provide to each member of the Child Access Center families. This year the Center is working with 44 adults and 35 children in 26 families. The goal is to be able to provide each with a $50 gift card for the holidays. That totals a goal of $3,950 for the 2023 holiday season.
Will you contribute to this support?
At this time, we are asking for a pledge, not a check. Please send the amount of your pledge to Ja Nae at [email protected] or Barbara at [email protected]. Gift cards are distributed to families the second week of December, so we will need your checks shortly after Thanksgiving. We will be in touch with you in mid to late November with instructions on how to fill out your check and where to mail it.
If you want to learn more about the work of Centre Safe and the Child Access Center, come to our event at The Rivet on November 14 – more information below. Jen Pencek, Executive Director of Centre Safe, will be with us to share information about the services those agencies provide.

Grant Project Update:

Children's Space at the Courthouse

In July, The Makery of Central Pennsylvania was the recipient of a $6,350 Women United Grant for the Centre County Courthouse Children’s Space.

The need for this space was confirmed by staff from the Youth Service Bureau, the Courthouse, and other organizations. It was proposed to be an alternative for children and teens having to wait in the hallways of the Courthouse, providing them instead with a peaceful, secure waiting space. Courthouse staff identified available space and grant funds were provided to be used to renovate the identified space and acquire some of the furnishings.

The Makery team wasted no time executing the project. On October 31, 2023 the team finished the final touches, as you can see from these before and after photos. It is a vast improvement! Now there is a warm and inviting place for children and young adults to wait while participating in court proceedings.

There will be a dedication ceremony on December 6th to unveil the new space and dedication plaque acknowledging Women United for their support of the project.

The Makery and partners are seeking support in helping stock the room with books and toys. To help these efforts they have indentified items needed and provided 2 links for the purchase of wishlist items.
